Foundation: Rainbow Factory

It is time to look back at our history and see the events and characters that helped us form the fandom and interests that we hold today. This weeks is a set of works that has spawned inspiration for art, music, fanfictions, and can be regarded as one of the many sparks that ignited our little dark corner and keep it going.

I am speaking, of course, about Rainbow Factory. To learn more, check out past the break.

Its no stretch of the imagination to say that it all started with a song. In fact that is exactly the case. Back in August 2011, one musician known as WoodenToaster, or  "Glaze" as he prefers to be called, submitted a work to the 6th installment of the Toast Beard competition.

The contest's theme had been "How Rainbows Were Made" and, unbeknownst to all, the night before Glaze had just watched Beyond Re-Animator and felt really inspired by the theme.

With its dark tones, the lyrics gave a sinister image of the Rainbow Factory, despite never outright saying so or using any sort of explicit language.

The song would come in second in the contest, but its mark had been made. Several remixes in many different styles have been made and it would come as no surprise if another one was being worked on at this moment.

As more music and art started flowing from this idea, a particular piece of fan-fiction stuck out.

Written in August of 2012 by AuroraDawn, "Rainbow Factory" tells of one pegasus' journey through such a facility and the horror within. While not excessively grisly, it does not shy away from violence and it is well-written. Even Glaze has remarked upon this, and included a link to it as well as a few of the readings on his original video.

The story has a cliffhanger before fading to black, but there is a sequel, most aptly named "Pegasus Device"

With these works out there, one only has to type in "Rainbow Factory" into a search bar, and they will be graced with images upon images of a bloodied Rainbow Dash, or a mutilated older Scootaloo. Whether one loves it or hates it, it cannot be said that "Rainbow Factory" did not leave a mark on the fandom.
