There are many stories in the grimdark corner of ponies, some told through song and some told through fan-fiction. This gem of our community grew from neither of these, instead it grew from a simple 8-bit game.
In what would be known as a simple, short, but unforgettable experience, Story of the Blanks has left its mark, and is the focus of this foundation post.
Learn more after the break.
It all started with a contest on the pony game news site known as Equestria Gaming, in which the goal was to design a "creepypasta" game. While the sky was the limit with imagination and creativity, the game itself could only use 8-bit graphics and sound.
One such entry was created by programmer going by the handle Donitz, who presented the game Story of the Blanks which would go on to win the contest.
Donitz also give credit for the atmospheric tracks in the game to CRTifiedTechnician, ZeroV2, and DarkNES.
In speaking about music, Story of the Blanks has also inspired a few artist to put their own spin on the tale. WolfofSadness' track, "Escaping Everfree" borrows from Story of the Blanks own soundtrack and add a haunting and yet fast paced thrill that can only serve as a chilling reminder of the horrors with the Everfree forest.
Music was not the only source of inspiration from the little game, an artist took it upon themselves to create an entire comic regarding the story.
Links to the next strip is in the comics description.
Finally, Story of the Blanks has also made itself known within the Tumblr community, and several ask blog featuring several characters. One of the more popular ones features none of than the main character herself, just in a not so ideal situation.
While not particularly bloody or creepy, this blog has amassed over six thousand follower and often make appearances in other well known blogs. Not bad for one who wasn't that great at running.
Story of the Blanks is a little tale with a lot going behind it and still hasn't been tapped for all it has. With locations to still explore, characters yet to be fully understood, and one giant mystery left unsolved, Story of the Blank will probably stick around for a long while, much like those ponies from good ol' Sunnydale.
